We are seeking an experienced senior leader to serve as the Government Statistician and Chief Executive (Government Statistician) to lead Statistics New Zealand. The Government Statistician is responsible for ensuring New Zealand has sustainable access to robust, independent, timely and trustworthy data and statistics for decision-making and analytical purposes.

Statistics New Zealand is New Zealand’s primary data and statistics agency. Its work is an integral component of the data and evidence infrastructure required to support social investment and drive economic growth.

The Government Statistician will lead, reorientate and drive change to enable high performance across all functions of the agency, adjusting and embedding a culture shift and developing a strong cohesive leadership team. A strong focus for the incoming Government Statistician will be to set a clear direction for the future of the organisation to support the implementation and delivery of a modernised approach to the next census, which secures the trust and confidence of all New Zealanders.

The successful candidate will possess the ability to strategically reshape and lead across the organisation and system. They will have a comprehensive understanding of the evolving data needs of New Zealanders, including improving datasets and access to data to support and grow the economy. A commitment to public service values and the ability to engage credibly with Ministers and a broad range of stakeholders is essential.
