We are seeking a change agent to serve as Secretary to the Treasury and Chief Executive of the Treasury (Secretary to the Treasury). This is a rare opportunity to lead at a crucial time as the Government looks to turn around the performance of the New Zealand economy and improve fiscal management across the Public Service.

As the Government’s chief economic and financial advisor, the Treasury leads New Zealand's economic strategy and oversees public service financial management. It provides advice to decision makers to drive greater economic growth and higher productivity, as well as value for money from Government investments.

The next Secretary will be willing to challenge the status quo to lift performance and find innovative solutions to challenges. You will play a critical role advising Ministers on policies and reforms to lift economic performance, improve productivity, reduce cost of living pressures and extract better value for money from taxpayers’ funds.

You will be a thought leader who will lead and drive the Government’s economic agenda. You will be well-connected to key parts of the New Zealand economy, including the business sector. You will be highly engaged with developments in the New Zealand and global economies in order to provide prompt, actionable advice to Ministers.

As the next Secretary, you will lead and uphold the highest standards of financial management across Public Service agencies and drive fiscal discipline. Your leadership will extend across the Public Service to drive continuous improvements and enhance the performance of public sector agencies, alongside other central agencies, to ensure New Zealand can afford quality public services.

Building effective relationships and upholding the principles of political neutrality and stewardship are essential aspects of this position.

A challenge awaits the next Secretary to help turn around New Zealand’s economy. If you think you are up for the challenge, you bring a strong track record in economic leadership and financial management, and you want to help shape the country’s future, we invite you to apply for the position of Secretary to the Treasury.
